Greetings from VKMfanHuey!!!

Welcome to the Gingerology blog for the 1932 First National / Vitaphone film, You Said a Mouthful!!!

Ginger plays the role of Alice Brandon, who is the daughter of some rich dude who lives on Catalina Island... who welcomes Joe Holt to town, er, island, for his participation in the big mondo swim around the island competition! Trouble is, the Joe Holt she picks off the boat is NOT the Joe Holt swim champ... but Joe Holt the down-on-luck sucker who was just looking for work at the docks after being submarined by a long-lost aunt's will... but, as Ginger is so oft to do, Joe is totally engulfed in her beauty and sweetness, thus goes full-bore into this swimming competition deal, consequences be danged... now, if he can only learn HOW to swim...

Please note the 'menu' above, which has various information regarding the film; to the right (just below the Gingerology link) there are additional links regarding the film.

Please feel free to leave a comment with any general info, links, pics, or just to say hi!

...And be sure to check out our 'main' site, Gingerology - just click on the Ginger pic to the right. There you'll find a list of ALL of Ginger Rogers' films; click on any one, and you will be directed to a 'dedicated' blog about that film (not unlike this blog).

Keep It Gingery, y'all!

...The GingerBinge Summer Continues with Joe E. Brown...

...Well, a neat 'early screwball', with Joe E. Brown as the centerpiece, and Ginger as the object of his affection (NO surprise there...) ...the pic below may be from this one or from The Tenderfoot, but, as JB is not in western garb, I'm betting it's from YSAM... not sure where this 'snapshot' works into the film proper...
...and after further review, I noticed the pic below on the back cover of the WB Archive DVD, so, yeah...
This one is a pretty easy view, clocking in at a neat 70 minutes... and Ginger was a pretty nice 'straight person' for Brown's off the wall antics... although sometimes I wonder if Ginger was secretly wanting to partake in the pratfalls as well...

As I have previously compiled a 'HueyReview' on this one, the nuances of the film will be talked about here... and honestly, not much 'nuance' to dissect - Brown does his thang as the goofy yet loveable underdog

I have this one on um...'computer', as well as the WB Archive DVD... which does NOT play on my computer... grrrrrr.... I'm tired of that... between CDs and DVDs, WHY can't you play these things on a 21st-Century computer??? Anyway, I'll just watch the 'computer-friendly' version for this review...

...I just noticed on the credits... "silks by Cheney Brothers"...um, what? Are we talking leggings here? Hu has no clue...

...Walter Walker appears here... hmmm... wonder if Hu is related...

...the YWCA pool in Kansas City...  ...bet Ginger swam in there a few times...
...Bus boys on Catalina Island get paid $6 a week? That's a lot more than Ginger's Cabana boy makes... of course, there are incredible 'intangibles' involved in that gig...

I like the 'self-evaluation' bits by Brown laced throughout the film... a precursor to Ferris Bueller's Day Off, if y'all know that one...
Here he is pondering whether or not to swim... to win over Alice... it's really not that hard of a decision, dude...
...no, not at ALL...

so, dude is swimming in the precursor (there's that word again) to the modern-day Triatholon... his new found... er, son, Sam, has to teach him... "...if it ain't asking too much, could You look down here and see what they're doing to Mister Joe?" ah, the power of prayer...

Well, Joe has some back problems... um... yep Trying to circumvent the race while still having Miss Alice's full attention...
...a VERY good gig if you can get it...

Ginger is SO cute here, whilst pulling the 'switcheroo' on the swimsuits for Mister Joe... I remember from the HueyReview that there was some critique regarding her overall wardrobe in this film, and heck, I think even Ginger herself may have had issues with it (lemme go consult the source...) ...yepyepyep... from Ginger: My Story... "Although I thought my clothes in that film were terrible, I was in no position to make a comment about them." This one is a bit unusual... but... she is SO cute here... did I mention how CUTE she is here?
well, the rest of the film rolls thru the BIG RACE... which is a funny sequence of slapstick stuff in the drink... not that it is a big mystery, but Mister Joe pulls out the win in the end (with the help of an aquatic varmint or two...) ...and wins Miss Alice... and all's well that ends well.
...as a side note, although the clothes were not the best, I really dig this hat on Ginger, even though it's QUITE impractical... kind of like a large round Belgian waffle perched atop that gorgeous crown... In general tho, Ginger was well presented in this film, which obviously helped her stardom rise... Joe was pretty helpful in making sure she was a big part of the proceedings in each of his films with her...I think he knew she was going to be big!

Again, a pretty good little film to watch for a Saturday morn... and of course a must for Gingerologists everywhere...

KIG. y'all!!!

  2. Love this corny, "B" picture. Every time I watch it, I laugh myself silly! Ginger, at this time a relatively new 21 year old, was as cute as a button and had some wonderful close-ups. Really like the scenes where she played "the nurse," taking care of Joe. Check out the many various facial expressions she had to use in that part of the film. She really distinguished herself among the bevy of young starlets Joe used in his movies. Think dear Farina nearly stole the show! Love his bits!! Was also fun to see Ginger in the pool at the end! When one wants something uncomplicated, this is a nice was to spend 70-some minutes. ;-)
